Halo Materials is building a domestic, cost-effective supply of battery-grade graphite using abundant and low-cost hydrocarbon feedstocks. In order to do this, we have designed a novel catalyst and reactor to produce very high-purity graphite flakes with tailored morphologies. The high starting purity minimizes downstream purification costs by reducing reagent use required to achieve the final 99.95% purity. The size control of the graphite flakes eliminates the need for grinding, which otherwise results in ~50% loss of the starting material as graphite fines. By addressing these major cost drivers in the cost of graphite AAM, Halo’s graphite enables domestic manufacturers to sell at parity with pre-tariff Chinese prices. A welcome byproduct is meaningful volumes of low-carbon hydrogen.
