Oregon State University is actively involved in battery technology development and campus services related to energy storage. OSU researchers, led by Xiulei “David” Ji, are developing zinc metal batteries and supporting innovations such as advanced electrolytes and hydronium-ion/iron-based battery research, funded in part by the U.S. Department of Energy to pursue alternatives to cobalt- and nickel-containing lithium-ion batteries. On campus, OSU’s Environmental Health and Safety department manages battery recycling and disposal, with multiple collection points and direct pickup options, while OSU spin-outs like OnTo Technology and GROTTHUSS INC. advance battery recycling and related technologies.
