The center studies how electrode reactions work and how to control them, with goals that include closing the gap between theoretical and practical energy density and reaching reversible multi-electron transfer in cathode materials. Its dry room and battery facility, open to academic and industry users, has a full pouch cell line, from slurry mixing and roll-to-roll coating to stacking and sealing, plus cell testing equipment.

The university is in Binghamton, New York. NECCES is led by founding director Stanley Whittingham, who shared the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the development of lithium-ion batteries.
