About
Nichia is a Japanese maker of materials and devices for light and energy: LEDs, laser diodes, phosphors, magnetic materials and lithium-ion battery cathode materials.
Its cathode business grew out of the powder synthesis know-how it built up making phosphors, and it runs the whole process from raw materials to finished product. It makes NMC and NCA cathodes, using a coprecipitation technique for particle design, plus lithium cobalt oxide and an olivine (LFP-type) cathode. These go into phones, laptops, power tools, vehicle batteries and energy storage systems.
The 2025 Battery Report lists Nichia among large-cap cathode producers.
