About
PMB Defence is an Australian manufacturer of main storage battery systems for submarines.
Established in 1989 to make the batteries for the Collins class, it now supplies lead-acid, nickel-zinc and lithium battery systems to customers in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and other markets. It is developing a next-generation lithium-ion submarine battery with international partners, and a nickel-zinc main battery that combines partner technology with its own IP, aimed at higher performance than lead-acid with lower cost and integration effort than lithium-ion. Its production, R&D and engineering facilities are located at the centre of Australia's naval shipbuilding industry.
The 2025 Battery Report lists PMB Defence among Asia-Pacific zinc battery manufacturers.
