Tempo (formerly RedoxBlox)
About
Tempo, formerly RedoxBlox, makes thermochemical energy storage systems that supply electrified industrial heat at 100 to 1,200 °C. Its containerised units charge from electricity in as little as four hours, when power is cheap, and discharge a continuous stream of superheated air to replace fossil-fuel burners in cement, metals, chemicals, food and other industries.
The technology is a magnesium-based metal-oxide material discovered at Michigan State University in 2015 by a team led by Professor James Klausner, now CTO; Pasquale Romano is CEO. Investors include Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Prelude Ventures. Tempo is based in San Diego, with offices in Dornbirn, Austria and Madrid.
The 2025 Battery Report shows redoxblox among metal-air and flow battery players in Europe.
