About
The North Carolina Battery Complexity, Autonomous Vehicle and Electrification Research Center, known as BATT CAVE, is a research center in UNC Charlotte's William States Lee College of Engineering.
It works on battery technology and autonomous vehicles, with research aimed at discovering new materials, challenging electrochemical theory and building mechanistic models for alternative battery types. In battery safety, its Battery Integration Lab runs mechanical and thermal abuse tests on modules to refine EV pack design models. Its materials group develops electrode materials from earth-abundant elements such as sodium and manganese.
The center is on the UNC Charlotte campus in Charlotte, North Carolina. Its expansion is supported by Engineering North Carolina's Future, a state initiative providing the university more than $45 million.
