Sthyr Energy
About
Sthyr Energy is a Chennai company developing a zinc-air battery system for long-duration and seasonal energy storage.
Surplus electricity runs a Zinc Regeneration Unit that turns zinc oxide back into zinc plates; when power is needed, the plates discharge in a zinc-air battery using ambient air and a water-based electrolyte, and the zinc oxide is reused in a closed loop. The company cites 550 Wh/l energy density, more than 30 days of backup and no self-discharge, and says over 95% of the system is recyclable. It targets grid storage, backup for data centres and defence, and remote microgrids. Its co-founders are Gunjan Kapadia (CEO), Akhil Kongara (CTO) and Muhammed Hamdan (COO).
The 2025 Battery Report lists Sthyr Energy among metal-air and zinc battery players and notes its seed round led by Antares Ventures.
