Allegro Energy
About
Allegro Energy is an Australian company developing a flow battery for long-duration storage based on a water-based microemulsion electrolyte.
The electrolyte mixes water, oil and surfactant, which the company says raises electrochemical stability from 1.2 V in conventional aqueous systems to up to 5 V, without lithium, vanadium or cobalt. It is non-flammable and works with existing flow battery hardware, and Allegro holds granted patents in the US, Europe and Japan. Thomas Nann (CEO), Fraser Hughson (CTO) and Rohan Borah (CSO) founded the company in 2021, building on their research at Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Newcastle. Its pilot manufacturing facility is in Thornton, Newcastle.
The 2025 Battery Report lists Allegro among Asia-Pacific flow battery players and notes a grant from Australia's Department of Industry, Science and Resources.
