Elestor
About
Elestor is a Dutch company developing a hydrogen-iron flow battery for large-scale, long-duration electricity storage.
Wiebrand Kout founded it in 2014 and was joined by Guido Dalessi the following year; Hylke van Bennekom, now CEO, joined in 2021. Elestor chose hydrogen and iron as active materials because both are cheap and widely available, aiming for the lowest possible storage cost per MWh; it also assessed a hydrogen-bromine design. It presents its systems as long-duration storage plants that can take over from coal-, gas- and oil-fired power stations, and in 2026 won the Hydrogen Innovation Award for the technology.
The 2025 Battery Report lists Elestor among Europe's flow battery players and notes an investment award for an Elestor project.
