AQUABATTERY
About
AQUABATTERY is a Dutch company developing a flow battery that stores electricity in table salt and water, for long-duration storage.
It is an acid-base flow battery: when charging, saltwater passes through a membrane stack and is split into acid and base, which are stored in separate tanks; when discharging, they flow back through the stack and recombine into saltwater, producing electricity. Five engineers founded the company in the Netherlands in 2014, combining water technology and energy science, and spent three years building the first prototype. It has built four pilots, is supported by the European Innovation Council, and is led by founder and CEO Jiajun Cen.
The 2025 Battery Report lists AQUABATTERY among flow battery players and notes that it signed a letter of intent with Sciven.
