Rivus Batteries
About
Rivus is a Swedish start-up developing metal-free organic flow batteries for grid-scale and commercial energy storage.
Its water-based, pH-neutral organic electrolytes are drop-in compatible with existing flow battery hardware, and Rivus says they cost about 70% less in capex than vanadium electrolytes. The chemistry comes from research at Chalmers University of Technology, the University of Turku and the Technical University of Denmark; founder Dr. Cedrik Wiberg filed the first patent in 2019 and commercial work began in 2023. Rivus plans a 13-ft container module (25 kW / 150 kWh) for 2027 and grid-scale systems of 1.5 to 6 MWh from 2028, with pilots in 2026 and 2027.
The 2025 Battery Report lists Rivus among Europe's flow battery players.
