XL Batteries
About
XL Batteries develops organic flow batteries for long-duration, grid-scale energy storage.
It was founded in 2019 by the Columbia University scientists who discovered its patented chemistry, which pairs proven flow battery architecture with a pH-neutral organic electrolyte. The company targets data centers, grid operators, independent power producers and heavy industry, and says its systems are non-flammable and non-toxic, last more than 20 years, exceed 70% round-trip efficiency and reach a levelized cost of storage below $0.05/kWh. It uses domestically sourced materials and has fielded a paid demonstration prototype.
The 2025 Battery Report lists XL Batteries among metal-air and flow battery players in the Americas, in its organic group.
